Linpack
Cyanogen is a god
Jan 25th
WOW! Cyanogen has done it again. I started seeing a new version of CyanogenMod ROM (version 5 beta) showing up on the list for the Nexus One. How does a 245% speed improvement sound? Holy Smoke! Almost 2.5X faster!! How’s he doing it? It looks like JIT can be turned on. JIT is the Just In Time compiler for Dalvik.
Wayback a year ago, a paper and presentation was put out about performance on Android. This was done by a team from the Berlin Technical University. The presentation was my inspiration to get Linpack for Android working. A couple of the things that they pointed out that hinder Android was that there was 1) No Just-in-Time compilation and it was 2) Optimized for small footprint, not raw performance. It looks like Cyanogen is fixing that problem. I wonder if it could help my G1?
Google at the crossroads: a review of the Nexus One
Jan 15th
Arstechnica has an insteresting review by Wayne Lau of the Nexus One. Wayne says; “The Nexus One is the best smartphone on the market at this point for general use. Its speedy specifications, excellent hardware design, marketplace full of applications, and direct Google support ensures that there are no other phones currently out there that match it overall. While there are some devices for particular needs, such as more robust push email from Exchange, or having a hardware keyboard, or a more integrated overall experience, the Nexus One is the standard that other devices should be measured by.”
Speaking of standards, I noticed a nice little graph comparing performance of a couple of phones:

Wonder where he got that app?
Linpack runs and a video
Jan 8th
Google is a great thing. I found an Italian Android blog (batista70phone) talking about running Linpack on a Motorola Milestone. As he said, via translation, “This morning I was trying on the Linpack Milestone in different situations, the best result was stable at about 4.6, the liquid reaches 3.2, just for example … then out of curiosity I watched the Top 10 . I saw that the American Droid arrives at 5-5.1 but then I noticed the Nexus One: 7-7.1 !!!!!!!!!!! I can not wait for my arrival retest live.”
What was really cool was he mentioned another site where a friend had tested a Motorola Milestone (Droid) vs a G1 Dream and they had a video of the test. Too cool. If someone knows Italian, please comment on what is being said.
Nexus One Linpack Run?
Jan 3rd
Ok, who did it? If you look at the Top10 runs for Linpack, you’ll see a 7.039 run with no description or notes. It was entered just before Christmas and I wondered if someone with the new Nexus One ran the Linpack benchmark to see where it placed. I think my suspicions are now confirmed with an article over at the NexusOneBlog. They have an excellent review of the new smartphone and they ran some benchmarks verses the Droid:

From my calculations, the Linpack number of 7.039 is almost exactly 67% faster than the average Droid number of 4.7.
So if someone who has a Nexus One, post a “real” number PLEASE?!
