Droid OTA to 2.1 (ESE81) Linpack

The over the air update from Verizon for the Droid has started.
The first posting of the Linpack number for the new Android 2.1 comes from “triton”, who’s Droid scored a 4.659 on Linpack.
His/Her post doesn’t show up on the device list because of all the overclocker/modders.  Maybe I should start a “stock” listing too.  Anyway, congrats to triton for being the first.

If you are itching to get the latest update and you don’t want to wait, see the AndroidandMe post on “How to manually install Android 2.1 for Droid

AppBrain

I was initially a big fan of Cyrket, but it went south a few months back when Google blocked some of it’s app discovery on the Android Market.  I recently found AppBrain and having only used it for a day, I love it.  This is something Google should have done from the beginning.  Having the best search engine in the world and a brain-dead market on the web just doesn’t make sense.  At least AppBrain is taking up the slack now.

AppBrain (http://www.appbrain.com) aims to provide the easiest and fastest way to get and share Android apps. The website is paired with an Android app (AppBrain Market Sync) for easy syncing between website and phone. AppBrain provides personalized app recommendations, fast and relevant search and browsing of other users’ installed apps.
AppBrain is developed by AppTornado GmbH, a leading Android developer team based in Zürich, Switzerland.

What is cool too is some of the Android Market analysis they have done.  I was surprised by really how few developers for Android there really is: “ In total there were 28,936 apps created by 7,429 developers. Even though the average number of apps per developer was just 3.9, there were 32 developers who launched more than 100 apps in the Android Market. The number of developers grouped by their number of apps launched is shown in the figure below.”

Nexus One with Froyo takes the Lead at 40.099 MFLOPS

We’ve had two different Nexus One phones with four good Top 10 Linpack runs.  The best being 40.099 MFLOPS!  Looks like some Droids need to do some catching up.  I’m fairly certain that these are not bogus runs, since I’ve added some anti-cheat mechanisms to the most recent release.  Still some funny results do occur when you overclock.

So is it Google teasing us??

As cyanogen said via twitter  “Linpack #4 is an N1 running Froyo. Cheaters”

And of course, TheDudesAndroid said “***shakes fist at userid****”

T-Mobile G1 Update

Well, I got my G1 update last night and I really can’t tell what it did.  From some of the forums the DMD64 update is intended to improve the phone’s call performance.  I did run Linpack a few times and it seems to run a slight bit faster overall and by slight I mean by about 1% faster.  At least the update didn’t cause it to run slower.

XDAndroid

TMONEWS has a posting about XDAndroid and how it is much more stable on a HTC Touch Pro 2.  As they state, “the Android installation experiences no difficulty in making calls, sending SMS, downloading apps, or browsing the web.  In fact, pretty much everything works besides GPS, Bluetooth, and the camera. ”

XDAndroid is a project to port Android to Windows Mobile devices.  This is being developed by the guys on the forums of xda-developers.

What I found interesting was that there were a couple Linpack postings for XDAndroid loaded devices.  So, I added XDANDROID to the Device list.  It will be interesting to see how well it performs on Windows Mobile devices.
